For good reason, only about 450 inhabitants live in the district of Zinnwald-Georgenfeld, situated between 780 and 880 meters above sea level.
With an average annual mean temperature of 5°C, the village is said to be one of the coldest, if not the coldest, places in Germany to live all year round. This predestines the whole region to be one of the most famous winter sports centers in Saxony. Perfectly prepared cross-country ski runs and small but fine downhill slopes invite you to discover the wonderful snow-covered winter landscapes. International competitions take place at regular intervals on the racing sled and bobsleigh track in the Oberbärenburg district.
The mining town of Altenberg also stands for a long mining tradition. This is testified to not only by the omnipresent curiosities such as the Pinge, but also by the mining museums in the region, which have been furnished with great attention to detail. If you want to escape the heat of the big cities in summer, you can take a deep breath in the oxygen-rich, fresh mountain air. Whether on foot, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage, you can discover the Osterzgebirge wildlife park in Geising, Geising- und Kahleberg or the Georgenfelder Hochmoor. An always worthwhile excursion is offered to our Czech neighbors with wonderful views from the crest of the Osterzgebirge down into the Bohemian basin.
